First we have Imus fired for a stupid, throwaway comment. Of course he shouldn't have said it, but FIRED? From both radio and TV when his JOB has always been to shock his listeners?

Now we have Terry Moran of ABC News saying the we shouldn't feel to sorry for the Duke accusers because they are white and rich, so they'll bounce back just fine. How vile and disgusting a statement is that? What if they HADN'T been wealthy???

They'd be sitting in jail right now, that's what. What a freaking stupid, vile thing to say.

And then we have Nancy Grace another vile spewer of tabloid TV journalism...

For a full year she's been "covering" the Duke story on her program at CNN. If you recall her broadcast of a child abuse case (which never went to court) caused the accused mother of the child to commit suicide. No "mea culpa" apologetic or responsibility-taking comments following that episode. And now that the Duke guys have been cleared COMPLETELY of charges, the day this happened, when it should have been big news on her show, she had a GUEST HOST appear in her stead.

I watched part of her show the next day and there was NO mention of the Duke case. She was on to her next pre-trial witch hunt. No apology, not even a mention of the Duke case.

That marks her as a vile human being in my book.

So back to Imus: What about Rosie O'Donnell? Thank goodness she hasn't said anything derogatory about blacks, huh? I guess it's open season on Chinese people and Christians, and you can accuse the President of being behind the murder of 3,000 U.S. citizens on 9/11, but God forbid you say anything about black people.

Shouldn't SHE be fired if Imus was? What about all the disgusting black rappers that have been spewing what Imus said ONE time for well over 10 years? Why do they get a pass? Isn't it MORE damaging to have people within the same culture denigrating their own? What about it Jesse? Al? Hello? If you guys really cared about ending black poverty you'd be concentrating at pointing the finger of blame back at yourselves and the community that glorifies going from one woman to the next, leaving each pregnant.

I've had it with this hypocritical crap. Pick and choose who to label as racist, prejudiced or whatever. Nail some to the wall and give others a pass.

What a load of crap.

Amidst her accusations of American Idol being racist, Rosie O'Donnel said that they're also "weightist."

Freaking hilarious.

She was talking about Frenchie Davis being kicked off the show in a previous season because topless photos of her emerged while Antonella Barba is still competing despite the racy photos of her that have been all over the internet. According to Rosie, not only was Frenchie kicked off the show because she's black, but ALSO because she was overweight.

Um, Rosie.... can you say Fantasia Barrino? Winner of the contest three seasons ago? Fantasia wasn't extremely TAN, she's black. How about Lakisha Jones, the overweight contestant this year with an AMAZING voice who will no doubt finish in the top two or three? Then there's Chris Sligh, overweight as well but one of the top three singers on the guy's side.

I don't know why I'm even wasting time on this, I'm just feeding into the Rosie-publicity-monster. She's incapable of staying out of the limelight for more than a couple of weeks at a time. I'm sure our fine psychiatric community will come up with "disease" to explain it, perhaps related to ADD or ADHD.

Eventually I have to get on the other side of the Expedition to make a turn, and as I pass it I see the driver's window down and the dad yelling at me and making gestures, and they weren't gestures of thanks.

He's riding around with a seven year old in the back set with an open window and no seat belt and he's yelling at ME.

Ok. Pet peeve mode here... What is it with people who are supposed to be friends, yet don't reply to calls or emails?

It takes me a HUGE amount of self-control to not send off a final email or phone call saying "You know what? I'm done. See ya around." I just tend to wonder what the deal is... did I do something to annoy somebody (can't wait for the comments on THAT one), or is it some wierd personality issue on the side of the person I've contacted?

I forward joke-type emails EXTREMELY rarely... almost never as a matter of fact, but of course there are folks that just love doing that for some reason. I've even received one of those emails rationalizing that behavior by saying "At least I'm thinking of you enough to send you this." Right... me and 50 other people that you cut and paste into the "To:" field in Outlook. What I find particularly enjoyable is receiving one of those from someone I haven't had a conversation with in a really long time, replying to that email with a personal note and never hearing back. That is until the NEXT chain email, which tells me just how much that person was thinking of me.

Do any of you just not reply to personal emails sent to you on a regular basis? Sure, it might take me a few days, maybe even a week if my Inbox and schedule are particularly swamped, but I always try to respond to a one on one personal email. Heck, this is even transferring over to phone calls. I'll leave a message with someone and I'll never hear back from them.

Of course the other thing that really kind of gets to me is folks who are polite when you do happen to catch them on the phone, saying how glad they are you called and such, but God forbid they ever pick up a phone to give you a call. Same thing when you happen to run into them... it's like you're their best bud ever, but outside of the coincindental meeting, you may as well have fallen off the planet.

And the same goes for Christmas cards as far as I'm concerned. Don't hear from someone all year and then you get either:

1. A card with nothing on it except "Merry Christmas" and a couple of signatures.

or

2. A four page newsletter with no personal note.

Tell me: Why even bother?

A few months ago, on a movie news and opinion website of mine I wrote an article about what had previously been a great kid's cartoon shifting gears during it's third season into being much more "sexy". The cartoon in question was the animated series Justice League, which was re-christened Justice League Unlimited at the same time the change took place. Little did I know what sort of visitors that article would attract.

Why do I say that? Because since I titled it Justice League: Soft Core Porn For Kids? (due to my feelings on the subject, read the article for details) the page has received tons of traffic. Not from concerned parents, but from sick bastards searching for kiddie porn.

It blows my mind to see these visits on a movie and TV related website. I track visitors to my site and consistently in the top 10 phrases that visitors use to find the site from Google is the phrase "kids porn". Extend it into the top 20 and I also find "Justice League porn" and the truly disgusting term "porn for kids".

WTF is wrong with people? Freaking unbelievable...

Since the home page of that site is updated with the most popular posts in the sidebar, due to the nature of searches for that particular page, I actually went out of my way to remove that page from the "most popular" results due to the nature of the searches used to find it.

Although those searches rank up there, thankfully they are a small percentage of the overall visitors to my site. Most people are searching ScreenRant.com for stuff like info on Smallville, Spiderman 3 or the upcoming Iron Man movie. Still, it's disturbing to see people visiting the site looking for that other twisted stuff.

UPDATE
Heh, I've added some code to the site so that if someone tries to click through to that page using one of those search terms, it will give them a chance to go ahead if they're a concerned parent, but if not it will redirect them to a more... appropriate site. :-) If you want to see what happens, click here (don't worry, it's nothing bad or repulsive).

Yesterday I commented on the fact that there are no overweight people in McDonalds commercials. I talked about how people basically have brought obesity upon themselves and at least one person chimed in (as I expected) with the "genetic" argument, which I think may be true in a VERY small minority of people, but no where near the numbers of people who are actually overweight.

In my opinion, a major strike against the "genetic fat" argument is that obesity levels were FAR lower up until 40 years ago than they are today. Add to that the fact that the percentage of people who are overweight in the United States is far greater than the number in other countries.

So what people who cling to the "it's not my fault" argument are saying is that there has been some wierd genetic mutation that has taken place ONLY within the last 40 years and ONLY within the United States.

Wow... I'll bet it was the same people in the U.S. government who brought down the WTC that are behind this insidious conspiracy!!!

If you want a sharp counterpoint to this argument, just check out the NBC reality show The Biggest Loser. That has got to be one of my favorite shows, even though it hangs the stigma of "reality TV watcher" on me. I find the people who participate in that program incredibly brave and inspirational.

Why is it a counterpoint to the "genetic fat" argument? This season they had one person from every state participate. Only 16 of the 50 people ever made it to "The Ranch" where they had the benefit of a personal trainer, doctor, nutrition info and a full-blown gym, however those who were not chosen still had incentives to work on their weight loss.

These were not folks with only 20 pounds to lose... the combined weight of the 50 participants was over 14,000 pounds or seven TONS. That's an average weight of 280 pounds per person, folks.

Well at the finale they weighed the group as a whole, and they lost a combined total of 4,000 pounds or 80 pounds each over a six month period. How did they do it? They took responsibility for their health by learning how to eat right, reducing or cutting the crap from their diets, and they started working out on a daily basis.

It was amazing to see the difference in these people, especially the ones who made the most progress and lost in the range of 50% of their body weight in six months!

The image above shows Erik, the winner of this season's prize as he looked when he begain and after six months, and yes, that really is the same guy in both images.

He made an incredible transformation which not only affected his appearance, but also his health, his attitude towards life, his emotions and his family. Now he will no doubt live long enough to see his daughters married, which before was most likely not the case.

So please don't give me that genetics B.S.

On the heels of my previous post (which was tounge in cheek for the denser among you) I risk being branded an "anti-fat" guy with this one. Well, heck, I'll admit it... I am "anti-fat" as it's more unhealthy than people realise and will probably contribute to bringing down the health care system in the U.S., but I digress...

I find it extremely funny that the only people ever shown in McDonald's commercials are razor-thin. Not just average, mind you, but having the kind of faces that have chiseled features. I tried but was not able to find any recent commercials online to show you examples, but if you watch ANY television at all, pay special attention to the actors in the commercials. I dare you to find someone who is vaguely overweight in any of them.

What I find especially interesting about this is that due to the preponderance of overweight people in the U.S., we are just starting to see people who match the national profile in commercials. Nothing overwhelming, mind you, but I was shocked to see a DirecTV commercial recently that actually showed guys in it that looked like your typical sports fan/couch potato with big ole guts on them. I've seen a few other commercials with folks who don't look like runway models as well, but I doubt we'll be seeing anything like that in ANY fast food commercials for quite a while, if ever.

Even commercials that are "striking back" at the idea of healthy eating, like those for Burger King showing their "Stacker" burger or monster breakfast sandwich, or even the Hungry Man frozen dinners do NOT show overweight people in them. It's sickening, really... can they be any more definitive in the lie that you can eat as much as you want and still have six-pack abs?

I just wonder when people are going to take the blinders off, look in the mirror, and make the connection that what they're sticking in their mouths correlates to what is happening to their bodies and that what they see on TV is a total and complete unreality.

Extrapolating from a study by the University of Illinois which stated that obese people cause their vehicles to get lower gas mileage, they must also contribute more to "global warming" than other groups.

The total amount of extra gasoline burned due to weight gain since 1960 is 938 MILLION gallons.

According to the Sierra Club, the average automobile emits 6 tons of carbon dioxide pollution every year, so every car driven by an obese person puts approximately an extra 360 pounds of pollution into the air. If 2/3 of the U.S. population is obese that comes to an extra 37,000 tons of additional emissons being put into the air, and if that doesn't add to global warming, I don't know what does.

Of course combine that with the fact that most big folks probably drive bigger cars (kind of hard to fit a 300 pound body into a Prius), then the number is probably even higher. Add to that the greater amount of food consumed which means that factories have to put out more food products which also contributes to pollution.

So the next time you want to rant about global warming, get mad at a fat person, not a Republican.

Now personally I think that the whole global warming thing is B.S., so if you're overweight take the above post in the humorous spirit in which it was intended. :-)

Freaking penguins.

Everywhere.

American culture has reached penguin saturation. I cannot turn around without finding a stinking penguin staring me in the face. They're in commercials, they're in movies, cereal boxes, juice containers, magazines.... just everywhere, and I've had it.

Corporate America, can you please find some NEW cute thing to use as your basis for the next advertising fad? I'm pretty sure that when I'm hitting the limit a lot of other people must be hitting it as well.

It started, I suppose with the (most excellent) movie March of the Penguins which was a documentary about a typical year in the life of penguins in Antarctica. Really, it was fascinating and even moving. Unfortunately it was such a sleeper hit with such staying power that advertising execs latched on to the concept like pit bulls. I mean what's not to like? They're funny looking, furry and cute (oh, especially the babies of course).

And then we had the devious movie Happy Feet come out, which although for over 6 months all they showed in commercials was a bunch of happy little dancing penguins, turned out to be a United-Nations-is-good-mankind-is-evil-for-destroying-the-environment story. Great message for the wee tykes, thanks. I guess it's ok for penguins to gorge on seafood, but not ok for people to eat fish. Yeesh.

So anyway, too much of ANYTHING is a bad thing and now it's like we're being stalked by the waddling litlle buggers.

Enough with the penguins already!

A video has shown up on MySpace that was filmed recently in Tampa Bay, Florida showing two young African-American (ok... black) boys beating the crap out of each other while adults (parents?) cheered, jeered and otherwise encouraged them to keep going.

You can find a local news story with a link to the video here.

The two boys, who like like they are MAYBE 10 years old, tops, wrestle, punch and basically brawl while a bunch of adults are standing around encouraging them to beat on each other and keep going. The video is hard to watch, and basically made my blood boil.

THIS kind of behavior from adults who are supposed to be role models is the reason that the next generation grows up to be poor, violent and utterly under-educated. So don't you DARE try to tell me that this is MY (middle class, conservative, white America's) fault.

And I don't care how uneducated you are... anyone who views that either in person or on video and is not mentally retarded KNOWS it's WRONG.

F***ing morons (the adults, that is).

Can you imagine how different things would be right now if somehow (and legitimately) the Republicans had won? HOLY cow what a monster outcry there would be!!!!

What about all that "voter suppression"? Hmm? Guess not.

At least Republicans know how to lose gracefully. No idiotic recount tirades and nary a lawsuit to be seen, which is exactly the opposite of what would have happened had the Dems not won control.

Just a little observation as yesterday I scanned a bunch of news aggregator sites for any new news having to do with voting machine-related stories. :-)

What's the connection between 7-11, Citgo, and Hugo Chavez? Only that Citgo is wholly owned by Petrleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of... Venezuela.

Props to 7-11 for doing the right thing.

Now if we can only completely disconnect from Middle Eastern oil and concentrate on U.S. oil drilling and oil shale production, we'd be stylin'.

On the heels of the Pope's comments concerning the violent aspects of Islam's founding (forced conversion or death), Muslims across the Middle East have expressed outrage that he would falsely accuse "The religion of peace" of such things by:

- Burning the Pope in effigy.
- Burning 7 Christian churches to the ground.
- Murdering a Catholic nun.
- Threatening that this will lead to war.

If I didn't know better, I'd think this came from one of the sarcastic articles at TheOnion.com or a Saturday Night Live skit, but sadly (or is that frighteningly?) it's for real.
